Historical Overview

The Division of Biological Sciences of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) was originally established in April 1945 under the name Division of Biology and Agriculture, by resolution of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. The first head of the division was Academician Mirasadulla Mirgasimov.

Subsequent heads of the Division included:

  • Acad. Mustafabey Topchibashov (1946–1952)

  • Acad. Abdulla Garayev (1952–1956)

In 1957, scientific departments of the Academy were temporarily dissolved but were reinstated in 1959. At that time, Academician Vladimir Rodionovich Volobuyev was elected as the academician-secretary of the restructured Division of Biology and Medicine.

In later years, the division underwent several reorganizations, with its current title officially being Division of Biological Sciences.

Notable academician-secretaries of the division throughout its history include:

  • Acad. Jalal Aliyev (1981–1991)

  • Acad. Shamkal Tagiyev (1991–1997)

  • Acad. Musa Musayev (1997–2007)

  • Acad. Ahliman Amiraslanov (2007–2020)

Since 2020, the Division has been chaired by Academician Irada Mammad gizi Huseynova, who also serves as Vice-President of ANAS.
